You, my man, are a genius! I was going crazy trying to figure out why my jailbroken iPad (tethered to my jailbroken iPhone 4 via MyWi) would be able to locate me so quickly and easily at home, but wouldn't work when driving around!

Few things that threw me off the trail :

1. Upon jailbreaking, I ran into "known issues" with OpenSSH and com.apple.locationd, where location services would be broken. So I thought it could be some kind of bug resulting from that.

2. But, I was previously able to use the built-in Maps.app as well as other navigation apps to fairly accurately track my progress through the streets while tethered to my iPhone 3G via MyWi. I thought the method of locating the iPad was done through the cell tower method you described above, so I just couldn't understand why it had worked before, but would not work tonight!

But after reading your post, it makes perfect sense now! Previously it had worked because I had tested it during the daytime when all the businesses were open (and their wifi networks were up). And tonight, I had tested it late at night when they're closed!

Thank you for shedding light on this and taking the time to share!

My apologies. My blog is primarily targeted towards geeks, hackers, and people akin to that spirit. In my opinion, more of them prefer light on dark color schemes rather than the converse. Different strokes for different folks!

I almost didn't read your blog, because of the white-on-black colour scheme. But I fired up FireBug, and changed your background and text colours (EEEEEE,000000), so it's much more readable. Anyway, good article. Now, all I have to do is get an iPad and test your hypothesis.

Hey Jeremy. Skyhook seems to have fantastic coverage in major metro areas based on their coverage map for WPS. They apparently use a fleet of cars driving around looking for wifi signals to populate that database. You can also add in your own information directly via their website. Very neat stuff.

I too had this happen while tethering my iPad with my Nexus One. It wasn't dead on accuracy, but pretty darn close. But on the highway where there isn't a hotspot in sight, location draws a blank and won't work.

 Loved your article, great read.
